And for this reason they are special and become

a destination for tourists from all over the world. Via dei Coronari in Rome is one of them. It is no coincidence that it was included in the ranking of the ten most beautiful streets in the world by the architecture magazine ‘Architectural Digest’: an important milestone for the capital, which actually has many suggestive streets. But what makes via dei Coronari so special?

The origin of the name of via dei Coronari

Just 500 meters long, via dei Coronari starts from via del Curato and ends in via di Sant’Agostino in the Ponte district. It owes its name to the sellers of religious crowns, the so-called ‘coronari’, who crowded the street full of pilgrims on their way to St. Peter’s. Also known as the Via Recta due to its regular course, its origin dates back to the Middle Ages. It was once full of shopkeepers who sold sacred objects: the shops have remained, but in the windows – instead of the handmade rosaries and icons – there are more and more boutiques or souvenirs for tourists. Despite this, via dei Coronari has not lost its ancient charm.

The story of one of the most beautiful roads in the world

Via dei Coronari is a street that unites the sacred and the profane. This is where two of Rome’s most famous courtesans worked: they were Imperia and Fiammetta, two beautiful women who lived during the Renaissance. Immortalized by artists and sung by poets, they were the dream of wayfarers and pilgrims who passed by the road to go to St. Peter’s. Not only that: Fiammetta was the lover of Cesare Borgia, illegitimate son of Pope Alexander VI and Vannozza Cattanei, he was an Italian politician and leader whose methods were so bloody as to be remembered as one of the bloodiest princes in the history of Italy .
